Big Walk Online Requirements
Subscriptions, accounts, and audio gear — what each platform needs before you join a crossplay session.
Big Walk is online-only co-op. There is no offline solo mode and no browser-based fallback — every session requires working internet, platform accounts in good standing, and on consoles, active paid online memberships where the platform holder requires them. Voice communication is woven into puzzles and navigation, so treating microphones as optional will frustrate your group faster than any puzzle on the island.
Use this page as a pre-flight checklist before your first Join Code night or when onboarding a new player who asks, “Do I need PS Plus for this?”
PlayStation 5 requirements
PS Plus is required for online multiplayer on PS5. Sony lists Big Walk as an online-play title with support for up to twelve players in one session. Without an active PS Plus subscription (Essential tier or higher), you cannot join a host or invite friends through PSN even if you own the game.
At launch, Big Walk also joined the PlayStation Plus Essential monthly games list (widely claimable from August 4, 2026 through September 1, 2026). Claiming the catalog copy does not remove the online membership requirement. Full pricing and claim steps: PS Plus & Price.
You also need a PSN account, sufficient storage for the install, and a DualSense controller. The game uses proximity voice through the controller mic or a headset; Sony’s party chat is separate from Big Walk’s in-world voice, and most groups prefer in-game audio so distance fading works correctly.
Crossplay from PS5 to Steam or Switch 2 works through Join Codes or PSN friends when the host is on PlayStation. Confirm crossplay is enabled in Big Walk settings after system software updates. For connection flow, see Crossplay Platforms.
Nintendo Switch 2 requirements
Nintendo Switch Online is required for online features on Switch 2, including joining Big Walk sessions hosted on any platform. Family memberships cover child accounts under the same plan; individual memberships work for solo account holders.
Switch 2 supports crossplay with Steam and PS5 using Join Codes from the Join Codes Hub. Voice chat on Nintendo hardware is historically more restricted than on PS5 or PC; many crews pair Switch players with in-game walkie-talkies, gestures (Gestures & Arms), or a phone Discord call while keeping game audio on the TV or handheld speakers.
Ensure the Switch 2 system mic permissions allow Big Walk to access voice if you plan to use built-in chat. Test in the tutorial area before crossplay sessions so friends are not troubleshooting menus mid-puzzle.
Steam (PC and Mac) requirements
Steam players need a Steam account, the Big Walk app installed, and a stable broadband connection. There is no additional subscription beyond owning the game on Steam (~$19.99 at launch, discounts may apply).
Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) or a supported macOS version meets the store listing. Big Walk recommends a decent CPU, 12–16 GB RAM, and a GPU with at least 2 GB VRAM for comfortable performance; the host machine should exceed minimum specs if twelve players stress physics interactions.
Steam friends can join hosts directly when both appear online. Cross-platform guests still need Join Codes. Steam Cloud may sync host saves on PC, but that does not replace the rule that only the session host’s save drives world progress for the whole group — see Host Saves.
PC players often get the best proximity voice experience with a wired USB headset. Open mic vs push-to-talk is personal; push-to-talk reduces background noise in large groups but slows frantic puzzle callouts.
Microphone and audio tips
Proximity chat is a mechanic, not a lobby extra. When you walk away, teammates genuinely cannot hear you unless you use tools like walkie-talkies or megaphones found on the island. Plan for that in hardware choices:
Use headphones to prevent speaker echo feeding back into open mics. Echo makes positional audio unusable for everyone.
Test before exploring. In the starting area, spread out ten meters and confirm volume falloff. Adjust Big Walk voice sliders before cranking system volume.
Push-to-talk binding helps noisy environments. Rebind in PC Controls or console settings if the default key or button feels awkward during climbing segments.
Backup comms for Switch 2. If built-in voice is thin, assign one player a walkie-talkie in-game or run Discord on a phone with one earbud while game audio plays on speakers — awkward but common for Nintendo crossplay nights.
Reduce environmental noise slightly if dialogue feels buried; footstep and wind volume can mask whispered directions in caves.
Network stability
Hosts should prefer wired Ethernet when possible. Wi-Fi works for many groups, but physics-heavy moments with twelve players punish packet loss. Guests on unstable connections may rubber-band during cooperative lifts or button holds.
If Join Codes fail repeatedly, restart the host lobby, verify crossplay toggles, and check platform service status. PC users behind strict routers may need to allow Steam networking ports or use Steam’s connectivity troubleshooting.
NAT issues rarely block same-platform Steam joins but can interfere with cross-platform codes; fixing the host connection fixes most guest failures.
Age ratings and privacy
Store pages note user interaction online. Proximity voice means strangers only hear you if you invite them into a session — there is no public matchmaking — but treat Join Codes like passwords. Post codes only in trusted group channels.
Parents should know sessions end when the host disconnects and that voice includes unfiltered speech from friends. Platform parental controls still apply outside the game.
Quick checklist by role
Host: Active online membership if on console, crossplay enabled, wired network if available, microphone tested, latest game patch, Join Code copied to chat.
Guest: Matching game version, subscription active on console, tutorial complete, headphones ready, code entered from the current lobby only.
Mixed platform group: Everyone read Crossplay Platforms; Switch players plan backup comms; agree on Multiplayer Hub etiquette before splitting up.
What you do not need
You do not need Xbox Live — there is no Xbox version. You do not need a separate Big Walk account beyond your platform login. You do not need cross-progression subscriptions because the feature does not exist; progress follows the host, not your platform ID.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Big Walk questions.
Do I need PS Plus to play Big Walk on PS5?
Yes. Sony requires PS Plus for online multiplayer. Owning the game alone is not enough to join friends online.
Is Nintendo Switch Online mandatory on Switch 2?
Yes for online co-op. Offline play is not a supported mode for this adventure.
Does Steam require a monthly fee beyond buying the game?
No subscription is required on PC or Mac beyond purchasing Big Walk on Steam and maintaining your Steam account.
Can I play without a microphone?
Technically yes, but proximity voice and many puzzles assume speech. Gestures, walkie-talkies, and text tools help, yet most groups strongly recommend a mic.
Will Discord replace in-game voice?
Discord works as backup, especially for Switch 2, but it bypasses distance-based proximity chat. Use it when platform voice fails, not by default, if you want the intended experience.
